Red Scarf Project

We've been rounding up all the scarves, knit or crocheted, that have been donated to us for the Red Scarf Project. Look how lovely they are!

If you are new to this project it was started in 2005, by Orphans of America (OFA). They launched a unique initiative to warm the hearts (and necks) of college-bound foster youth. They began taking donations of handmade red scarves to put into their Valentine's Day Care Packages.

We have been participating since it started and have had wonderful results thanks to all of you!

This years deadline for Red Scarf submissions is January 31st.

For Red Scarf guidelines click here.

Just got in a donation of wonderful hand knitted warm cowls too!

Thank you and continue to drop off your scarves at Yarn Garden until January 31st.

Gift Idea - Ball Winder & Swift

To our amazement, we received ball winders and swifts, just in time for the holidays!
A Christmas miracle!
These are on so many wish lists this year so we ordered a ton of both. No more tangled skeins of yarn or hand winding balls with the yarn wrapped around your feet.

The swift is a light weight, collapsing metal umbrella that attaches to any table or bookshelf, vertically or horizontally and winds from a handle on the top. It's very easy to use and when closed, fits in the smallest spaces.

The ball winder is made of plastic and adjusts to fit onto any table, bookshelf or even a chair. One end of the yarn is placed through the metal loop hole for tension and then fit into a slit on top of the winder. This winds yarn into a great ball that is flat on the bottom with the end pulling from the middle of the ball so it doesn't roll around.

One of each, please!

Gift Ideas - 1 Hour Scarf

I've been saving this one for a very last-minute knitted gift. It's the One Hour Scarf by Sirdar.
A super soft, super bulky chenille, 100% nylon that literally does knit up in one hour on a size US 15 needle. The finished scarf is nice and long, about 8 ft, so you can wrap it around your neck a few times to stay warm and cozy.
This scarf only uses 1 ball and the pattern comes with it, printed on the yarn label.

This would also make a great gift for any knitter!

We have the pink and purple made up in the shop hanging on our "Gift Ideas" wall.

I love how soft this is!

Gift Ideas- Shawl Pins

We just got a whole bunch of these gorgeous shawl pins in stock, so many different styles to choose from, I had to add these to our gift ideas. Hand blown glass, hand carved wood, mother of pearl, you name it! These make a great gift because they have so many uses. Great for closing shawls, cardigans, or even using as fancy hair-sticks!
My favorite right now is the black Lantern Moon wire safety pin. It's like a modern take on the kilt pin. Must have stocking stuffers!

More Triana Colors!

New colors of Triana arrived today! We posted this yarn a couple weeks ago featured as a knitted Triana Boa Scarf. This scarf only takes one ball of Triana and knits up in just a couple hours on US 11's and the pattern is free.
I love the new colors!

The Triana Boa Scarf

Pink variegated. The yarn is net-like and you only knit into the edge making a fluffy fabric.
Come in and check out the new colors! This would make a perfect last minute gift...

Gift Ideas- Man Hat

I recently finished the Man Hat by Haven Leavitt in one night using only one ball of Ragazza Metoo Print. (Excuse the terrible photo, it was dark and I was excited to post about it) The pattern called for a bulky weight yarn knit down on a US 8 needle for warmth, so I thought I'd give this new yarn a try. Metoo Print is a chainette blend of 80% merino wool, 15% acrylic and 5% nylon. It's machine washable and the color changes are slow and subtle. I really liked working with the yarn and watching the colors fade from olive to forest.

I'm really liking chainettes, they make such a soft and lightweight fabric but still warm.

Ragazza No. 2 features Metoo Print. This hat and jacket on the cover are both knit in color 105, mottled petrol.

Hat, snood, sweater and arm warmers all in Metoo Print, color 101 mottled plum. Featured in Ragazza No. 2 booklet.

Gift Ideas- Lantern Moon Silk Needle Case

It's time to get elegantly organized with the Lantern Moon silk needle case.
The case has room to hold both straights and circulars with a zippered pouch for stitch markers, scissors and anything else. It measures 15" x 6" and is made using raw and patterned silk.
This is a great gift for yourself or your favorite knitter!

We only have the black and gold case in stock, but we have plenty of them because it's our favorite color combo!

We also have a case for double points or crochet hooks...

This is a silk fan case also from Lantern Moon. Forms a fan when closed, the case opens to reveal a big wheel of ultimate storage. 13 pockets in translucent organza help make tool selection a breeze and the magnetic closure keeps them safe and secure.

Open, it measures 17" in diameter, and folds to a compact 8.5"h by 12"w triangle. In iridescent taffeta, with your choice of six colors.

You can put these on my wish list!

Gift Ideas- Ragazza Lei Hat and Cowl

New from Lana Grossa's Ragazza line of yarn is Lei. It's a super bulky 100% merino wool that knits up on a US 15 or 17. It's surprisingly light weight for how bulky it is and really soft.
This cowl is knit flat using three different shades of purple and then seamed.

Ear flap hat in three shades of purple, just one ball of each color.

Ragazza Lei Color in a heathered purple, color 101. We also
carry the Lei Print and Lei Solid.

The booklet, Ragazza No.2 has the pattern for the Ragazza Lei hat and cowl, along with some other really cool patterns.
A lot of hats, scarves and over sized sweaters.

Another color combo idea.

Gift Ideas- Magic Cowl

Magic Cowl

I mentioned this cowl a while back, and I think it would make a fabulous gift!
It's really easy to knit and looks so one-of-a-kind, people will stop you on the street! As you knit this, the yarn changes from ribbon to sparkly mohair to boucle to big nubs and in some skeins, beads! The hand dyed colors blend together beautifully and change along with the texture. We used 1 skein of Be Sweet's Magic Ball and a pair of 24" circular US 10.5 and 11 needles. This is a free Yarn Garden pattern with the purchase of the yarn.

The cowl looks gorgeous worn long like a necklace or wrapped around your neck twice to keep you warm and stylish.

New colors have arrived! Dark shades of reds, browns and more.
